He'd asked her to come see him when she was done cleaning up after dinner. That was over an hour ago and since then, Melou had been waiting in his room patiently. Or, at least as patiently as he could be while puttering around nervously.

Finally the door opened and she slipped inside. He stopped his pacing and smiled at her. "Hey."

"Yeah, you did. Thanks for that."

He sighed again and walked over to her, tilting her head up. "Look, Bri, you know I care about you."

"Aye." She agreed softly. "When ye feel like it."

"No, I mean it. Always."

He let her go and returned to the desk, picking up a small pouch he held out to her. "Here."

"What's this?" She looked surprised, though still stepped forward to take the item from him, turning it over in her hand curiously.

"It's your birthday." He smiled. "Got you something, of course."

"Aye, it is." Briallen gave him a quick smile in return and then opened the pouch, tipping the contents into her hand. And blinked at it.

"Ye can' give me this." She whispered.

"Yeah, I can." He walked back over beside her. "It's a little, you know, different. But you know what it means if you take it."

She nodded and just stared at the ring in her hand, eyes moving over the dragon pattern across the top. A damned dragon.

Well. She was in for it now, wasn't she.

He watched her for a few moments.

"Are you gonna take it?"

She laughed softly and smiled up at him.

"I s'pose I am."

"Good." He grinned, relieved, even if he didn't really think she'd have made him take it back.

He took the ring from her hand and slipped it in her finger.

"Doesn't really change much. It's just, well, if I could, I would is all."

"I know." She leaned her head against his chest and slid her arms around his waist, toying with the ring where her hands clasped.

"Nicest thing I ever got."

"Suits you." He gave her a gentle squeeze. "You gonna stay?"

"Can' rightly not after this, can I?" She huffed out a laugh and then lifted her head to kiss him.

He kissed her back and then tugged her toward the bed.

"Yeah, I know." It was as good as he could tell her in return. She knew.
